Made from individually carved pieces of Italian limestone, this pair of rams’ heads vases on pedestals make quite an impression. The intricacies of each carving indicate that a true master carved these.
Each vase is topped by a fruit and floral finial with concave bases that are adorned with fluting. They sit on a dome-shaped piece of stone that is adorned with four fruited acanthus swags. Each of the swags are tied by crinkled ribbons near the top of the dome.
Deep relief carvings of two ram heads that dominate the body of each vase are positioned below egg and dart molding. Situated on opposite sides of the concave stone piece, each ram has two layers of carved motifs emanating from the center of their spiral horns, connecting the two animals. The upper row is comprised of crinkled ribbon, while the lower level is a fruited acanthus swag. The final decorative element of the vases is a gadrooned fillet with circular moldings above a ring of repeating lotus leaves around the foot.
The vases rest on top of classical vertical columns with recessed rectangular panels on all four sides. The tops of each column features cavetto cornices, which are slightly wider than the similarly molded plinth beneath the column.
Our pair of carved limestone ram heads vases on pedestals would look fantastic in a garden setting. They would also make nice additions when placed on either side of a driveway, a large doorway, or even indoors as part of a winter garden room. They have been resting outdoors in Italy for the past year or two, so they have developed a very attractive patina. Vases come apart in sections for easy transport.
CONDITION: Good condition with lichen buildup, especially on plinths. Minor rubs. Stone is a material that can change color with exposure to the elements. Please see photos.
