Wrought iron is tough, yet malleable, allowing the metal to be worked into elaborate scrolls and other sinuous motifs. This pair of wrought iron candelabras from Bordeaux, France (circa 1900), features two demi-lune arms and several bracketed scrolls.
Five flat bobeches top each candelabra, arranged in a three-tier spread. Both of the “U”-shaped arms are topped with two sconces, while the fifth light source is located atop the main column. A pair of volutes are bracketed to the column above both arms, followed by a third set above the base. Each pair of bracketed volutes is progressively larger than the one above it. The candelabras are supported by C-scroll legs with curled feet beneath a cross slat adorned with flared ends. Our pair of wrought iron candelabras can be used as decorative accessories as is, but to function as an illumination source, they would need to be re-wired.
CONDITION: Good antique condition with some oxidation, resulting in a mottled brown and orange patina to the original black finish. Fleabites from the smithing process. The candelabras are no longer wired, but the threaded mounts from previous electrification are still present.
