Description

Since the early 1800’s, the term “Black Forest” has been used to describe elaborate wood carvings, often showcasing animals in a realistic manner. The name was derived from the eponymous area of Germany, where the style was thought to have originated. In actuality, the Black Forest carvings can be attributed to a 19th century wood turner, Christian Fischer, from Brienz, Switzerland, where these carved wood and crystal flower vases were crafted.

Each of our lovely vases depicts a stag standing in front of a tree on textured and uneven ground. The terrain bases are ovate, with similarly shaped, but larger plinths beneath. Both trees have a foliate covering providing shelter to the stags. Glass flutes slot into the top of each trunk above the canopies. The flutes have been etched with sprawling foliate motifs.

Our pair of 19th century Black Forest wood and crystal vases can be used in any style house. The vases can be displayed as accessories in a bar and game room or used as flower vases for small bouquets in a living room or hallway. They could also be used as epergnes, which are ornamental centerpieces, in a dining room.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with minor rubs to wood. Light buildup and scratches to crystal vases, which are not original.
