This fabulous table top trunk is Neo-Gothic in style. It is from France and dates to circa 1860. The top has an incised neo-gothic motif with a patterned ground beneath the individual carvings. Two small linear moldings surround this center motif, one plain and the other has small stars and stylized palmettes. A group of raised linear, pyramidal, hand carved motifs surround these two moldings with a fourth small linear molding of diagonal lines. Notice the tiny scrolls at the upper corners of the diagonal line motif. The body of this small trunk has four finished sides all with the same neo-gothic motifs. There are four pillars or columns at each corner and the interior has been covered with red felt, including the inside of the top. The detail and depth of the carvings on the sides of the box are quite impressive.
This walnut wood trunk from France will be a point of interest wherever it is placed.
