From a French Chateau in Montpayroux, comes this specially commissioned antique walnut wood, Louis XV style buffet with original conforming marble top. The beautiful Breche D’Alep marble top is over 2 inches thick and rests over four front doors, which are flanked on either end by two open shelf corner units. The serpentine shape is complete with curved and canted corners, stepped in and stepped out shaping to the front, out turned angled pilasters and a plinth base. There are a total of four different depths to this buffet in the wood and marble construction. The ornamentation is all hand carved tiny shells with interlacing and bellflower drops, acanthus leaves, C and S Scrolls, cartouches, and gadrooned shells. Ebonized trim moldings highlight this piece throughout. On the doors of this piece, and in other sections, we see walnut veneered over what is mostly like Oak. It was often common for veneers to be applied over oak and pine in higher quality pieces. Undulating curves exhibited on this buffet were extremely difficult to accomplish.
CONDITION: Good antique condition with some previous restorations. Minor chips, rubs and scratches to wood commensurate with age and use. Marble has cracks and some areas of fill, but was reinforced at one time from the bottom. New keys recently fitted (2) which operate doors and 2 of drawers.
