Limestone Garden Armillary Sundial with Carved Tassels and Floral/Foliate Motifs

Description

Hand-carved in Italy, this limestone garden armillary sundial features carved tassels and floral and foliate motifs. The wrought iron armillary has an arrow-shaped gnomon that runs through the center of a three-ring sphere. Armillary sundials were originally used to indicate the time of day as the sun moves across the sky and casts a shadow off the iron gnomon.  At the base of the sphere is an iron rod that inserts into the top of the stone pedestal, which is adorned with quarter round molding.

Beneath the molding is a concave neck that has been carved with widely spaced fluting in a spiral orientation. The main body has three distinct motifs, with beaded tassels above a floral and foliate rinceaux, while an acanthus leaf graces the bottom of the body. All three elements have been carved without interruptions, forming a complete ring around the pedestal and are separated by a protruding molding. A circular foot with quarter round edging sits on a square plinth with thick molding, providing a stable base. Our Italian limestone armillary sundial with tassels and floral and foliate motifs will make a fabulous addition to any garden.

CONDITION: Good condition with minor nicks and rubs to iron. Light rubs and buildup to stone, with traces of moss and lichen. Stone is a natural material that can become darker or lighter from the elements.
