From an elegant manor house in Toulouse, this antique trumeau mirror dates to the 19th Century, while the oval painting dates to the mid 1700’s. The frame has been painted a pale-yellow ochre, and the gilded motifs and moldings are in the Louis XVI style. The oval painting is older than the trumeau itself, and it dates to the 1700s. It depicts a classic 18th century scene of a couple courting in an outdoor setting, with sheep, a goat and a steer to the left. It is a perfect example of genre style painting, as it depicts the everyday life of ordinary people.
CONDITION: Good overall antique condition with restoration to some gilded motifs, minor losses to paint and gilding. Minor warping to oval frame.
