Signed in the lower right corner (“Nice A. Blondeau”), this large oil on canvas painting (91 inches long, framed) depicts the view above Nice, in the south of France. The lower half of the canvas is dominated by verdant and rolling hills blanketed by red and pink flowers. Several brown houses with terracotta tiled roofs can be seen in front of a small forest. If you look closely in the center of the painting, you can see a woman in a blue dress walking with baskets in hand through the forest, possibly returning from picking flowers. A large, mountainous coastline is visible in the background, with a section of the Mediterranean Sea in front. The bright blue sky is relatively clear, with little cloud coverage, giving the appearance of a lovely summer day. The original, intricately designed giltwood frame with foliate motifs provides a lovely surround for the painting.
Alfred Justin Blondeau was born in France in 1850. Blondeau was known for his landscape paintings, typically incorporating the Nice coastline into the scenery. Based on some other paintings by Blondeau, our large oil on canvas with a view from Nice was most likely painted in the late 1800’s. Its important size and bright subject matter will make it a stunning addition to any large wall.
CONDITION: Good antique condition with light buildup and age separations to frame. Slight craquelure to canvas with small old repairs. Professional restorations to giltwood frame. Not wired for hanging.
