Measuring slightly over 2 feet tall, this hand-carved limestone architectural depicting Neptune is quite impressive. Neptune (or Poseidon in Greek) is the Roman god of the sea, making it apt that this Italian carving functions as a fountain element. In art and architecture, Neptune is often shown as an older man with a full beard. He is also often seen with fish or other sea animals.
The attention to detail of the carvings is exceptional. Note the thickness of the facial hair and the delicate curls to the hair. Hidden within Neptune’s hair are two stylized dolphins that resemble mythical sea creatures. Their scaled tails wrap around the sides of Neptune’s face until interlacing at the crown of his head. Neptune’s lips have been carved in an open fashion, almost as if he were yelling. There is a hole cut in the back for a spout, which would allow water to exit through his mouth. Another hole has been cut towards the top of the back side to facilitate hanging.
This large and impressive Italian Neptune fountain spout would make a great addition to the side of a pool or fishpond. He can also be hung on a wall as a decorative architectural.
