This large and colorful French oil on canvas painting from the 19th century is titled Le Retour a La Ferme, or “Return to the Farm”.
Rural life is the theme of this quaint pastoral scene. A row of trees lines a cobblestoned street outside of a walled community. There are a few people in the background walking down the street, including a woman holding a jug on her head.
The foreground includes a herd of cows in a field behind the trees. A tribe of goats gathers at the base of one of the trees while dogs run around them. A woman places a child on top of a cow as a young boy guides them across the paved street towards the entrance of the town. Outside of the entrance, a man in a hat talks to a woman sitting against the wall, while some poultry peck the ground nearby.
The sharp colors, most noticeably green, blue and cream, accentuate the painting. The light from the sky, contrasted to the ground covered in the trees’ shadows, gives the painting a sense of realism. A thick, giltwood frame surrounds the canvas, putting the finishing touches on a vividly colored piece of art.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition. Minor fleabites to the giltwood frame. Small section of the canvas has been professionally touched up.
