This amazing bench has been hand-carved from limestone by a master Italian mason. The details of each stone (there are seven total) indicate that the bench was crafted by an extremely skilled carver.
A lion mascaron on top of a pair of acanthus rinceaux comprises the center of the bench back. The rinceaux flare upwards before sloping down, flanking the lion at this point. In between the rinceaux is a fruited garland swag with matching margents. The seat beneath has a round edge that leads gracefully into cavetto molding.
Beneath the seat is a rectangular support in the form of a seated winged lion. The attention to detail is apparent, as you might notice that the tail is only visible on the lion’s left. The lion sits on top of cavetto molding.
Each arm of the bench features a winged lion in similar attitude sitting on a rectangular plinth with deep molding, although these lions are carved in a much grander scale. The wings curve concavely, forming a volute scroll with a beaded center section. The tops of the manes are formed as curled leaves, transitioning gently into the beads above it. The tails are shown on the outside of each support, just in front of vertically orientated grapevines. The grapevine, the beaded scroll, and the top of the bench back come together in a rectangular joint, which is topped by husked finials rising out of curled lotus leaves.
The seating area is 65 inches wide and 16 inches deep, allowing multiple adults to utilize the bench. Our Italian limestone bench with lion and garland motifs would make a grand statement if placed in a garden. It would also look fantastic in an interior courtyard.
CONDITION: Very good condition with minor rubs and nicks to stone. The seat has developed a much desired dark grey patina from exposure to the elements. Please see photos.
