Description

This oil on canvas painting depicts a vivacious interior scene, either at a tavern or boarding house. The vibrantly colored painting is enhanced by an ecru matte board and surrounded by a carved and gilded frame with a mahogany-colored outer border. Signed by the artist in the lower left corner, there is also a plaque affixed to the bottom of the frame reading “Aldo Affortunati”. On the back is a tag from the Florence Art Gallery.

The focal point of the painting is a group of four men sitting around a wooden table laden with food and beverages. One of the men, dressed in blue and red with a red cap, is standing with his glass in hand. He appears animated, looking at the man to his left while his other two companions listen. A wiry hair dog with white and brown fur stands beside a crossbow on the floor and gazes intently at the men. Two domestics are continuing with their routines, with an aproned man tending to the fire behind the quartet and a woman carrying a plate of food towards them. Another patron can be seen behind the woman, enjoying a meal. The front doors are open, with two horses hitched in front of the building in the background. Green trees can be seen in the distance beneath a bright blue sky with fluffy white clouds.

Aldo Affortunati was born in 1906 in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, in the Tuscany region of Italy. Affortunati first gained attention with his Tuscan landscapes, utilizing techniques of the Macchiaioli, which was a group of 19th century painters that preferred to capture light and movement by painting outdoors. Eventually, Affortunati switched to using a palette knife for his paintings, which allowed him to have thicker and more brilliant colors. The works of Affortunati can be found in collections worldwide, from the US to Brazil.
