Description

This marble bust of a woman was hand-carved in marble that has a stark white hue with some areas of gray patination. The bust is signed “G. Dupre F. 1877” on the edge, indicating that this is a work from the famed Italian sculptor, Giovanni Dupré. Dupré was one of the most respected Italian sculptors of his era, and his works are still respected today, with sculptures on display in the Hermitage and Museo dell’Opera del Duomo among others. Subjects of Dupré included the mother of Napoleon, Letizia, and his great niece, Marie.

While the subject of this bust is unknown, she was most likely an important woman, as evidenced by her elaborate hairstyle and tasseled shawl over a blouse with ruff collar. The woman has a wry smile, as Dupré was a master of capturing realistic expressions of his subjects. Carved later in Dupré’s career (he died in early January 1882), this marble bust would make a fantastic addition to a niche, pedestal, or table.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Traces of existing restoration to the nose. Light losses to right ear, with fleabites elsewhere. Light buildup. Signed “G. Dupre F. 1877”.
