Known as a coffret, this French table box from circa 1875 is a masterpiece of craftsmanship inspired by the Black Forest style. The rectangular table box boasts intricate carvings, with its lid featuring canted corners adorned by a captivating high-relief medallion of a majestic bird with outstretched wings, gracefully nestled within a lush floral wreath embellished with a trophy of an arrow quiver and a lit torch. The cartouche rests upon a cloud-like carving, encircled by a delicate dance of foliate and scroll motifs, complemented by a second ring adorned with repeating roundels. The four scrolled feet elegantly interrupt a continuous molding of foliate margents. While the sides showcase a leafy arabesque above, the front is graced by a floral swag that envelops the keyhole; all carvings have been meticulously rendered in relief. The back features a larger arabesque that is shallowly carved into the wood, adding a touch of intrigue to this exceptional piece. Inside, a luxurious red felt interior provides a vibrant contrast to the dark brown patina of the wood, making this coffret not only a testament to artistry but also a practical and visually captivating addition to your décor.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition, with minor age separations, nicks, and small losses. The key is decorative, as there is no lock. Very light verdigris and wear to the hinge. Small lift to the interior upholstery in corners, despite the presence of old glue.
