Heavy 19th Century French Walnut Entry Door with Carved Urn and Foliate Motifs

Description

A robust door, hand-carved from walnut in the 1800s, this French architectural is four inches thick, more than capable of functioning as an entry door. The door consists of two wonderfully carved panels, with a fluted and foliate urn above a four frond palmette. Both panels project beyond the main body, enhancing the thickness of the door. The upper panel is surrounded by thick quarter-round and cavetto moldings, while the lower panel is not surrounded by any molding but is topped by a large cavetto entablature with a thick kickplate beneath. A detached transom, seen in some photos, provides a juxtaposing style of architecture, with a Gothic-like arcade set within a rectangle. The door has a beige hue with areas of light gray and light brown, while the transom has a darker brown palette. Our 19th century walnut door would make quite an impression whether used as an entry door, a wine cellar door, or a walk-in pantry entrance.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Minor nicks and losses, with light age separations. The gudgeon pins have commensurate oxidation and are most likely the only original hardware remaining. The door also has a carved transom (seen in some photos) that is not required for installation.
