Description

Although the term “Gothic” was originally intended to be used pejoratively, the term has come to describe the intricate latticework and high arches that defined architecture in Europe during the High and Late Middle Ages. Our French blanket chest or trunk was hand-carved from oak in a Gothic style, likely originating in the early- to mid-1900s.

The overhanging top has three layers of thin molding, mirroring the plinth at the bottom which is slightly wider than the main body. Gothic arcading adorns most of the front façade, embellished with beautiful tracery featuring prominent ribs. Spandrels separate the arches into five niches, with the top of the center section having no carvings; instead, it is covered by a shaped metal escutcheon with an offset hasp. The plinth has been carved on both sides and the front with a thick meander in the shape of C-scrolls.

Exaggerated dovetail construction can be seen at the merging of each side, adding to the visual appeal that is afforded by the Gothic carvings. The wood has a deep brown patina with some lighter golden accents, further enhancing the beauty of this Gothic-style blanket chest or trunk. It can be placed at the foot of any bed or used in a game room.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition with minor age separations and losses. Light nicks and buildup to the interior. No key. The hasp has been twisted, which caused a small rub to the front, both commensurate with age and use. Please see photos for details.
