Finely Carved Antique Oak Candlestick from France, Late 18th Century

$700.00

Description

With its finely carved foliate motifs, this antique candlestick has an equally impressive rich, deep brown color from an unmatched patina. Hand-carved from oak in France in the late 1700’s, the elegant candlestick sits on top of a tripartite base with concave sides. The large circular bobeche has protruding molding above rings of foliage and beading. A bulbous neck with spiral fluting rises above a fluted shaft and gadrooning. An egg and dart knop mirrors the shape of the base, beneath a foliate cup. The large legs are comprised of volutes with leafy tendrils that flank a floret and a scalloped bivalve shell. Our French candlestick would make a fabulous decorative accessory for a mantle or small table. It could also be electrified for use in American homes, serving as a small desk or table lamp.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition, with light age separations and wear. Based on the presence of holes in the wood, the candlestick was possibly electrified at one point. The white candle sleeve is not attached to candlestick and was used for photography purposes only.
