Circa 1830 Italian Walnut Wood Wall Cabinet in the Renaissance Style

$2,900.00

Description

Hand-carved in Italy, circa 1830, this walnut wall cabinet has numerous Renaissance style motifs. The details are quite amazing, with all available space utilized. Even the edges of the two full length shelves have been adorned with recessed niches inside a repeating crenellation. The small turn that operates a latch on the right door also has a motif: in the shape of a hand clutching fabric.

The front of the doors are adorned with a raised coat of arms surrounded by a beautiful vertical foliate cartouche rife with curled leaves and palmettes. There are also mythical creatures located within the foliage, including bearded dragons, winged mascarons, and pegasi. The doors are surrounded by a raised molding embellished with a barbed husk motif inside of a roundel border.

Beneath the doors is a small (18” W x 5” D) drawer bracketed by a pair of ogee corbels. The drawer has a mascaron pull flanked by winged chimera with foliate rinceaux tails and another barbed husk border. Below the drawer is a panel festooned with a scrolled and foliate shield surrounded by bearded dragons and curled leaves. The foliate and mythical creature theme is continued on the sides of the cabinet, beneath a crown featuring double cyma reversa molding of foliage over egg and dart.

A beautifully executed walnut wall cabinet, you will literally notice a new motif new every time you look at the cabinet. It can be hung on any wall where small storage is needed, such as in a bathroom, hallway, or kitchen.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Wear commensurate to age and use, with minor nicks and rubs. Two hooks affixed to the back for hanging.
