Fantastic Set of Italian Hand Carved and Parcel Paint Urns, C. 1950

$5,200.00

Description

Hand-carved circa 1950, this fantastic set of Italian urns features a parcel paint finish to the intentionally distressed wood, designed to mimic antiquity. Both urns have been carved in the classical calyx krater form (known in Italian as campana, or “bell”), with the lower body shaped like the calyx of a flower above a stepped base, which sits on a roughly square plinth.

The quarter round moldings of the eight inch diameter openings have been adorned with a repeating egg and dart motif. Foliate carvings grace the main body of each urn, above a ring of gadrooning. On each side of the lobed waists is an upturned handle affixed by mascarons. There is a ringed protuberance embellished with foliage and rounded crenellation on the neck, above the fluted base.

Each of the urns have a parcel paint finish in an antique white and gray, with traces of light green and gold delicately interspersed on top. Our set of Italian hand-carved and parcel painted urns were expertly crafted to emulate an old world feeling. They can be used with any interior design style and would make fantastic decorative items or vases for cut flowers.

CONDITION: Good condition with intentional distress to mimic antiquity, including losses to wood, gilding, and paint. Minor nicks and rubs, with some faded motifs. The urns were hand-carved, so there are variations to the bases. Please see photos and dimensions for details.
