Early 1900s Terra Cotta Plow Horses Sculpture from France

SKU: 122-4 Category:

$3,200.00

Description

Signed “Geo Martel” on the left side of the ground, and measuring nearly 40 inches long, this terra cotta sculpture depicting horses plowing a field was created in France in the early 1900’s. The pair of yoked horses are wearing blinkers and pulling a triangular plow adorned with protuberances. Small metal chains attach the horses to the plow.  Both horses have their heads down, lunging forward as the plow drags across the uneven ground laced with holes and hoof marks.

Georges dit Geo Martel was a French sculptor born in 1872. Although Martel’s specialty was ceramics, he also produced works in other mediums, such as terra cotta. From 1900-1942, Martel owned and operated a faience studio in Desvres, in the north of France. It was one of the largest manufacturers in Desvres until it closed its doors in 2003.  This large and unique French sculpture will be the focal point anywhere it is placed.

CONDITION: Good condition with wear commensurate to age, including light buildup and minor losses. Old repairs present. Two small chain links were added above the plow to replace lost links to the yoke line. Please see photos for details.
