With an abundance of available storage compartments, this three-door French enfilade would make a fantastic addition to a dining room, living room, or bar area. Hand-carved in oak in the early 1900s, several Louis XV-style carvings embellish the versatile buffet. The original finish has been removed, allowing the hearty grains of the wood to become visible.
Marquetry and parquetry were two techniques used by Louis XV woodworkers to embellish furniture. The top of the enfilade features Versailles pattern parquetry surrounded by a thick and recessed quarter-round molding. Beneath the top are three drawers with drop iron pulls flanked by a scalloped leaf margent on a small textured panel. The carvings and the pulls are set within a thin cavetto border, and each drawer is separated by a rectangular floret. Aligned beneath each drawer is a rectangular door that opens on iron hinges to reveal three separate compartments (the outer sections have two shelves, while the center has three). Both outer doors have an asymmetrical molding topped by a floral margent emerging from a scalloped leaf (a common ornamentation for Louis XV carvings). The center door is similarly carved, but it is symmetrical and has a shell in lieu of the leaf. Like the drawers above, the doors are separated by small margents on textured wood.
The rectilinear appearance of the enfilade is softened by a highly shaped apron adorned with thin molding and a central floret margent emerging from an attenuated leaf. The sinuosity continues to the two front legs, which have been carved with a glamorous gadrooned leaf curl in the shape of an S-scroll over angular pad feet. Both back legs have a curvaceous nature, but they are less grand and unadorned. Our bleached oak Louis XV-style enfilade has a lovely beige color with warm, gold accents, allowing it to be paired with a variety of interior décor styles.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition, with minor age separations. The enfilade was bleached more recently, leaving slight traces of the original finish. Three functioning door locks, each with its own unique key.
