Early 1800s Carved Limestone Trumeau Fireplace Mantel from Loire Valley, France

SOLD

Description

This hand carved, antique French limestone mantel is in the Louis XVI style. It dates to the very early 1800’s and is from the Loire Valley. The simplistic elegance of the Louis XVI style is only ornamented with stepped in and stepped out moldings at the crown and pilasters. The classic oval molding at the center of the trumeau is its focal point. It can be left as its own subtle decoration, but of course, it also leaves the option of adding a painting, a hanging sculpture, cartouche, etc. True antique trumeau firplaces such as this one are becoming increasingly difficult to find. This antique mantel, with its large single oval molding is quite different and will complement any period of design.

CONDITION: Minor losses to stone, chips and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Creasote evidence on interior backing of upper stones from old log burning
