Description

This lovely gilt bronze coffret was hand-carved in France, circa 1830, using the engraving technique known as ciselure. A flip-top lid adorned with fruit, foliate, and floral motifs opens to reveal a well-worn textile upholstery. On top of the lid are three figures in reclining positions, with the central subject having a quill for a right arm and a tablet at their feet. A small child can be seen on either side, with the one on the left-hand side clutching a cornucopia, while the youth on the opposite side holds a shaped escutcheon embellished with a raised crown and fleur de lys.

The small decorative box has concave sides that have been delicately chased with floral and foliate margents on the long surfaces. Each of the short sides have deeply incised walls that have been filled with fluted niches topped with closed crowns. Standing under the arches are four distinct figures, each representing a Bourbon King of France. The underside of the coffret has been etched with Roman numerals to indicate the names of the kings (clockwise from the figure on the front left of the box: Louis XV, Louis XVI, Louis XIII, and Louis XIV. A scrolled foot can be seen beneath each king, under a crenellated border that runs along the entire box.

Full of intricate chasing and incredible details, our French gilt bronze coffret is a period Louis Philippe piece. Originally designed to store small valuables, the coffret can still be used in that function. It also makes a lovely decorative item that can be displayed in a glassed-in cabinet or on a small side table.

CONDITION: Good antique condition, with wear commensurate to age and use, including buildup to bronze and light staining and creasing to the upholstered interior. Slight rubs to the clasp area from the lid opening/closing. No key.
