Carved Rosa Verona Marble Plaque from Italy, The Winged Lion of Venice

Description

A unique take on a historic symbol of Venice, this rosa verona marble plaque was hand-carved in Italy. According to ancient Venetian lore, as Mark the Evangelist was traveling through Europe, he came across a lagoon in Venice. While stopping for a rest, an angel appeared to Mark and stated Pax tibi Marce, evangelista meus, or “Peace to you Mark, my evangelist”, which can be seen inscribed on the page of a book beneath the right forepaw of the winged lion. Interestingly, the book has been carved in high relief at an angle, giving the sculpture additional depth. The sculptor has also carved the initials “A.S.” in the upper right corner, just behind the addorsed wing.

The winged lion has long been a symbol of not only Venice, but also of St. Mark. As the legend goes, the prophet, Ezekiel, had a vision where four winged animals represented the evangelists; Mark appeared as a lion. As Mark was the patron saint of Venice, his winged visage became linked to the city, as there are numerous renderings architecturally and in fine art. Our salmon-colored Italian marble plaque would make a fantastic addition as a wall-mounted sculpture to any style house.  Although not antique, the surface of this marble has been masterfully aged and distressed, giving an appearance of a marble carving that is hundreds of years old.

CONDITION: Good condition with light buildup and age separations. Minor nicks and rubs. Please see photos for details.
