Hand-carved in Italy, this limestone garden bench features winged lion armrests and a backrest adorned with scrolls and fleur de lys. The richly decorated backrest is topped by a pair of facing volute scrolls with central florets and filled with beaded poppy flowers. Beneath the flowers is a rectangular panel depicting a molded and shaped coat of arms with a fleur de lys charge. A foliate and floral rinceaux emanates from both sides of the shield, spreading in a spiral orientation. Under the backrest is a four-inch-thick seat with an incised front section and quarter round molding on three sides.
On each side of the seat is a winged lion armrest, depicted in a couchant (lying down with head raised) manner. The top of the addorsed (spread behind) wings terminates in a scroll embellished with fluting. Above each scroll is a cupped leaf that abuts against the tail of the scrolls of the backrest. Just below the lion is a volute scrolled foot with a foliate facing. At just over 70 inches wide, our carved limestone garden bench can be positioned where space is at a premium, yet still comfortably seat three adults.
CONDITION: Good condition with minor rubs and scratches. Light buildup in some areas. Stone is a natural material that can become darker or lighter from the elements. Sections of the bench have developed a lovely, speckled patina.
