Black Forest is a style that originated in Switzerland in the early 1800’s, with a focus on realistic and elaborate carvings of figures, animals, and vegetation. Hand-carved in France, circa 1890, this small, dome top trunk is in the style of Black Forest.
The arched top has been adorned with two panels of a thick and winding vine dotted with foliage. Each panel is surrounded by a fluted protuberance, resembling small branches or twigs. A strip of leather veneer separates the panels, with all three sections continuing to the front façade. There are two concentric circle wooden pulls on the front, allowing the lid top to rest open with the aid of leather straps affixed to the interior. Each side has a thick, circular wooden handle, set amongst carvings of faux wood grain, complete with knotholes, which is also seen on the back side.
A perfect decorative storage piece for smaller items such as folded blankets or children’s toys, our black forest trunk can be used where space is at a premium.
CONDITION: Good antique condition with minor rubs and scratches and light age separations to the top, all commensurate to age and use. Light buildup to the interior with acceptable nicks, losses, and chapping of the leather straps.
