This hand carved limestone armillary sundial with carved acanthus leaf décor and wrought iron sphere will make a grand statement in any garden. Invented by the Greeks in the third century BC, the original armillary spheres were earth-centric, which is how the Greeks believed the universe functioned. Over the centuries, armillary spheres have been altered to reflect scientific advancements.
The wrought iron armillary has an arrow-shaped gnomon that runs through the center of a four-ring sphere. As the sun moves across the sky, the gnomon casts a shadow, indicating the time of day. At the base of the sphere is a semi-circular base with two iron bolts that slot into holes carved in the top of the stone pedestal. Several layers of quarter round molding encircle the top of the pedestal, above a curled acanthus leaf that envelops the concave body. A thick circular plinth provides a strong base, allowing our acanthus leaf and wrought iron sphere armillary sundial to be used as a wonderful decoration piece in any garden or courtyard setting.
CONDITION: Good condition with minor losses and rubs to stone. Light nicks and oxidation to iron armillary. Stone is a natural material that can become darker or lighter from the elements. Please see photos for details. Not intended to be an accurate measure of time of day.
