Antique Rough-Cut Limestone Farm Trough from France

SOLD

Description

Dating to the early 1800s, this limestone farm trough from France has been hand-carved using a technique known as rough-cut. Artisans use this technique to excavate large amounts of sculpting/carving material before typically using a finer instrument to add details and make dimensions equal. In the case of this trough, the stone mason elected to keep the edges uneven, giving the 52 ½ inch long trough a more rustic appearance. A slight accumulation of moss and lichen has given the light gray stone areas of black and green patination, adding character to the rough-cut limestone trough. The walls are roughly 3 ½ inches thick with a one-inch drainage hole in the corner, allowing the trough to be used as a long and unique planter box. It could also make a wonderful basin for a wall fountain.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Wear commensurate to age and exposure to elements, including cavitations, buildup, and acceptable losses. The trough was intentionally carved in a rough-cut manner, leading to variations in the dimensions. Stone can change color with exposure to elements.
