Beautiful up close as well as from a distance, this elegant parcel paint, antique French, Louis XVI style center table is the epitome of ornamentation in the Louis XVI period. The hand carving of flowers, ribbons and garlands on the table is packed full of small and detailed motifs. The tiny flowers and leaves within cross ribboned garlands on the apron are just one example. Secondly, note the details of the violins over scrolls of music on the musical trophy motifs. The shaped second tier is pierced with foliate and floral motifs, with a beautiful, central, pierced bouquet of flowers. All this is upheld by fluted, en asparges (asparagus buds) straight legs with drapery motifs and tied c- scrolls at the top. The carver of this table was a true master in his field.
The top of this table is a beautiful inset variegated marble top, original to the piece.
In the design of furniture, the Louis XVI period brought a return to antiquity, especially Grecian, which was synonymous with vertical and horizontal lines. Motifs softened any rigidity, but they never interfered with straight lines and symmetry. Wooden furniture and room paneling or boiserie, were often painted. Seating frames from chairs to settees were created by a maitre menuisier, a guild certified furniture maker, and the carving was achieved by a maitre sculpteur ornemaniste, also certified as an ornamental sculptor. In the provinces, the provincial craftsmen did all of the construction and carving. However, it conformed to the style of that particular province, as well as following the current trend in Paris. This amazing Louis XVI style center table will be an asset to any home.
CONDITION: Good antique condition with old restorations, minor losses to motifs, age separations, nicks and traces of old woodworm.
