This is a charming 18th century oil on canvas painting depicting 3 cherubs in a wooded setting. The young cherub in the center, draped in white, is leaning back, presumably learning to play the flute. The cherubs on either side are dressed in bright red and blue coverings. The cherub in blue sits beneath, holding up sheets of music, while the cherub in red holds the flute and supports the smaller flute player. They are all sitting on a boulders above a small body of water, with a background of brown and green bushes and trees. A menacing sky looms above the trees, yet the group of cherubs are illuminated with a warm light.
This painting was likely part of a tall trumeau panel which dated to the 18th century. It would have been framed in an elaborate painted boiserie, with gilded moldings, and a tall and narrow mirror beneath. Mirrors were enormously expensive in the late 17th century, but as production techniques evolved, the “trumeau mirror” became a sought after decoration in Chateaux and villas across Western Europe, primarily Italy and France.
This Italian oil painting, with it’s shapely in-curved shoulders and bright coloration, will add interest to any wall its placed upon.
