“Le Laboureur Et Ses Enfants”, The Laborer and His Children
The charming genre scene was printed in 1867. It is full of detail, offering a glimpse into some of the French furnishings and characteristics of an imagined country home in the 1800s. Upon closer inspection, you see a typical stone and oak lintel fireplace, mother and children, rush chairs, and of course the aging laborer and his 3 adult sons. This scene takes inspiration from the beautiful 1668 French poem by Jean de la Fontaine whereby the dying farmer extolls the virtues and treasure that only true hard work can bring.
CONDITION: Good overall condition with some yellowing of paper around edges, wear to giltwood frame.
