Description

This antique French oil on canvas painting (signed in the lower left “A. Derians”) depicts a peaceful pastoral scene featuring a shepherd and his flock at sunset. The sky has tones of pink, yellow, and orange, indicating that it is late in the day. Behind the flock is an inlet with a large forest behind it and lush grass in front. The dirt road that the sheep travel on appears to start at the body of water, which is most likely brackish, as sheep require high levels of sodium. Two stone houses with thatched roofs can be seen on the left side of the painting, separated by several trees.

Derians was a specialist in animal scenes in the taste of the Barbizon School. His paintings were principally of herds of sheep and cows. The gilt shaped rectangular frame features shells, flowers, acanthus leaves and c-scrolls.

CONDITION: Good antique condition, with minor rubs and buildup to giltwood frame. Some losses to parts of frame. There is a slight bend to one corner of the canvas with fleabites.
