Known as a poissonnière, this copper and brass fish kettle was hand-crafted in France, circa 1840. The ovate shaped cookware has a rolled rim and a shaped iron handle with a center raised section (the raised area would have slotted onto a crémaillère, which is a chimney hook suspended over a fire). There is a removable, pierced liner with large sieve holes and two hooked handles that would have been used to drain the juices from the cooked fish. The poissonniere has dovetail seams on the sides and handles affixed by two rivets, both indicative of French craftsmanship of the mid-19th century. Our copper and brass fish poacher can be used as a small jardinière for dried flowers or simply as a decorative accessory in the kitchen.
CONDITION: Good antique condition with fleabites and minor cavitations. Acceptable buildup to interior with light oxidation to liner, both commensurate to age and use.
