This French perspective oil painting of a cloister is truly masterfully painted. The shadows of the vaulted ceiling and arcade define the positioning of the building. Light is pouring in from the outside quadrangle. On the left forefront a woman and a young girl are sitting on the floor of the hallway. The older woman has her hand out in hopes of receiving money. In the far distance another person is coming down the hallway. The artist has painted incredibly detailed columns and capitals, depicting period Medieval style.
This painting will be a wonderful focal point of any room.
There is an illegible signature in the bricks on the floor at the bottom right of the painting (no photo as the signature is too faint), dated 1852.
CONDITION: Minor fleabite losses to painting. Minor rubs to frame.
