Chimney bars (in French: bar de cheminee) were designed to be aesthetically pleasing and functional. Sometimes referred to as a fireplace fender, the chimney bars not only decorated the front of a fireplace, but also prevented logs from rolling out onto the floor. This charming example from France (circa 1880) is adorned with a pair of facing greyhounds on top of a shaped entablature.
Both dogs are laying down, with their front paws crossed above the beaded top edge of the plinth. The facing is divided into three segments above a gadrooned border, all adorned with a fluted background. A pair of large rosettes embellish the outer two panels that flank a foliate cartouche inside an oval with pierced roundel ends. The two plinths are connected by a molded base beneath a cylindrical rod, with the latter helping to prevent logs from rolling out. A must-have for any dog/animal lover, our antique French cast iron bar de cheminee will be the perfect decorative accessory for any fireplace.
