Grape hottes were used at French vineyards during the late 19th and early 20th centuries by workers when harvesting grapes. This particular hotte is from circa 1900 and has been painted more recently with a dark blue background and a derivation of the Chateau Malescot St Exupery vineyard label. Black lettering with cream embellishments have been painted above and below the label: “Chateau Malescot St Exupery” and “Margaux”, respectively. The stylized label consists of two golden lion supporters flanking a red coat of arms shield charged with a cream chevron and three gold florets. Additionally, a nine point open crown in gold and cream tops the shield, while a cream banner reading Semper Adnetum (“always attached”) can be seen beneath. Our dark blue grape hotte would make a perfect decorative accessory for a wine room or kitchen.
CONDITION: Good antique condition, with some oxidation to the interior, commensurate with age and use. The painted elements were added more recently, with some minor rubs. The hotte originally had straps affixed to the back for toting purposes, but they are no longer present.
