Description

Removed from a large property in Northern France, this antique oak entry door was hand-carved circa 1850. The large door (95 ¾ H x 51 ½ W x 1 ¾ D) has an octagonal metal knob in the center beneath a mail slot marked “Lettres”.

On the upper half of the door, a thick molding forms a rectangular panel, curving upwards before merging seamlessly with a richly carved crest near the arched top. The gorgeous element has a central floret surrounded by a roundel, which is flanked by a pair of volute scrolls. Above the floret is a sprawling curled leaf display festooned with margents, while a scalloped leaf forms the base of the crown. The lower section of the door features a partial parquetry panel beneath a cavetto cornice. At the base of the door is a large door sweep in the form of a rectangular plinth. The entire door has been constructed with round dowels and reinforced with square iron pegs.

The original frame, which is currently detached from the door, measures 100 ½” H x 60 3/8” W x 3 ¾” D.  A previous owner installed a doorbell on the right side of the frame, and the push button hardware remains. The door can be installed with or without the original frame, but either way, this gorgeous antique door from France will make for a grand entrance on any home.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with wear commensurate to age and use, including minor age separations, nicks, and losses. Slight warp/bend when viewing from side. Visible old fills and repairs. Light trace of an old light green paint in some areas.
