Made from 10 pieces of Italian limestone, our large garden bench has highly detailed hand carvings throughout. The seating area is over 7 ½ feet long and features a quarter round edge above cavetto molding.
The backrest is comprised of three pieces of stone: two horizontal rectangle panels that flank a smaller central vertical post. The larger stones are festooned with sprawling cartouches of acanthus rinceaux with a scalloped shell center over a faint and sparse background of horizontal lines. The center post has been carved in relief, with a fruited margent hanging from an open roundel. This stone is topped by a sloped capital with a small ovate finial.
Beneath the seat is a scrolled center support on a rectangular plinth. The base of the scroll has been carved with a monopodial lion’s paw, complete with tufts of fur and sharp claws. The two side supports have similar bases (a scrolled monopodial lion paw on rectangular plinth), but they have also been carved with a climbing vine embellished with acanthus curls and floral center rinceaux. The vine rises until merging with the head of a volute scroll that originated from the long mane of lion above. Each lion has a grapevine margent emanating from its mouth that runs down the front of the support, terminating just before a floret surrounded by curled leaves. The back of each support is topped by a flattened capital with Egyptian cornices and step molding.
This large Italian limestone garden bench has some impressive carvings. At almost nine feet long, the bench would make a great addition to any outdoor setting.
CONDITION: Very good condition with minor rubs and nicks. Limestone is a natural material that can change colors with exposure to the elements. Areas of stone have started to develop a highly sought after light green patina.
