SKU: 422-82 Category:

$5,200.00

Description

Hand-carved in walnut, circa 1830, this pair of antique armchairs were produced in the department of Lot, in southwestern France. Sinuous arms extend from the front of the large, slightly reclining back rest. Each arm is adorned with two carved leaves (one near the back rest and the other on the volute handrest). Small S-scroll stumps beneath the handrests also have a foliate carving, as does the small strip of wood between the back and the seat. The H-stretcher and connectors are arbalete shaped, each with three more foliate detailing. A noix consisting of a berry cluster can be seen on top of each connector. All four legs are roquillard (cabriole with a leaf on the upper curl) above volute feet.

The foliate frames have a deep, rich color, offset by the more recent stark white cotton upholstery affixed by numerous brass nailheads. They can be placed at the ends of a rectangular dining table or used as side chairs in a living room or library.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition, with fleabites and minor rubs and nicks. The chairs were recently reupholstered.
