This stunning antique French, walnut wood trunk in the Renaissance style, has an oval stylized cartouche at the center. It depicts a Classical scene of a woman who is reclining against what appears to be a large rock. Her left arm is raised and her hand is resting upon an open book. There are indistinct letters and numbers on the pages which we believe read, 2 4 3 i on the first line and 7 S 8 6 beneath. To the sides of the cartouche are framed panels. Lion’s head pilasters are on either side of these with a ribbon around the Lions’ necks holding stylized oval cartouches. There are gadrooned acanthus leaves around the base molding of the trunk. The sides are framed rectangles and the back is unfinished. All this rests upon four bun feet. Not only is this trunk beautiful to look at, it has the additional benefit of extra storage! It dates to the mid to late 1800s.
CONDITION: Minor losses of wood to some motifs. Top has age separations and minor loss to front right area. There are traces of old wood worm. Slight bowing to front left vertical panel. Two pieces of wood along back may be removed for slight reduction in depth.
