A large red hotte, with a black painted fleur de lys and the number “19”, this grape harvesting basket would have been used in Burgundy, France, during the 1800’s. The original canvas straps are still affixed to metal hooks on the back, which would have allowed the vineyard worker to wear the hotte on his/her back while harvesting grapes. Interestingly, there is also a piece of burlap attached to the straps, which was most likely used for padding across the upper back. Our red painted wine grape hotte with fleur de lys would make a fantastic addition to a bar room or kitchen.
CONDITION: Good antique condition with wear commensurate to age and use, including light buildup and oxidation to the interior. Some rubs and scratches with slight paint loss. The original straps and the burlap padding have minor fraying and losses.
