This antique table from Italy is painted various shades of dark green, and is decorated with colorful family crests, pin striping, and floral motifs. Like many of the painted antique pieces from Italy, this table is constructed of pine. Since the table was always intended to be painted, there is no need for the wood’s color and graining to be on display. Softwood pine is lightweight, easier to work with and plentiful in the northern parts of Italy. The overall form of this table is rectangular, with truss ends, low stretcher and runner feet. At just under 5 feet long, it is to be considered an occasional table. Similar sized and shaped tables have been popular in Italy for 500 years.
The table seen here has a dark green painted top that sits on green urn shaped truss ends, framed in ochre and burgundy painted pinstripes. Each table end is painted with a red and white shield, crossbow, stars, and topped by a large gold crown. This is supported by a flowered foliate wreath. The insides of the legs are painted with bouquets of roses, flowers, and green foliation. A pegged stretcher holds everything in place.
Today, this beautifully painted and unique Italian table can be placed in a variety of areas throughout the home. Its size allows it to be used as a breakfast table, writing table, or sofa table.
CONDITION: Good antique condition with some wear and minor nicks to paint. Runner feet has some denting and splits in the wood.
