This attractive 19th century oil painting is set into a Louis XV style giltwood frame with scalloped leaves, C-scrolls, and floral margents. The painting depicts the Adige River as it winds through Verona, Italy in a hazy gray/orange sunset sky. Large, detailed buildings are on either side of the water, connected by an arched stone bridge. In the left background, we see more buildings, but with rich blue rotundas. Several boats are docked along the right bank, while a sailboat and oared boat drift in the foreground.
The painting is signed lower left, “Fr. Gilbert Verona”. Fr. Gilbert is one of the pseudonyms used by the Austrian landscape and architectural painter Karl Kaufmann (1843-1902).
CONDITION: Good overall condition with some light separations and losses to frame. Painting has some discoloration on the varnish. Rigged for hanging.
