Description

Reminiscent of the color scheme of Delftware, this blue and white armorial albarello jar dates to the 1800s. The off white ground of the Italian jar is prominent on the verso side, while the front is adorned with a large coat of arms cartouche above a hillside castle in cobalt blue. A visored helmet with a large foliate plume tops the scrolled heraldic shield that is emblazoned with a bird, a starred bend, and a fluted geometric shape. The “skies” above the castle are filled with sprawling imagery of the same blue hue, consisting of C-scrolls, flowers, and vines that extend to the sides of the albarello.

During the Italian Renaissance, Asian traders arrived, bringing ceramic jars that carried some of their wares. Italian ceramists adapted the form and motifs of these vessels, calling the new version albarello. Albarello would often be used in apothecaries to hold salves and herbs used in treating medical ailments. Most modern collectors will present them as beautiful decorative accessories, but our blue and white jar could also be used to hold kitchen utensils or fresh cut flowers.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition. Minimal paint losses. Slight buildup.
