Description

This small French oil on canvas painting would look fantastic on the wall of any room of the house, either by itself or among a large collection of art. The scene depicted in the painting is that of an outdoor religious processional, taking place in a small town that sits at the base of some hills. In the center of the painting are three bishops, dressed in vestments, with one holding a sun-shaped crosier, or staff. In front of the bishops is a large garden with multiple archways and two fountains on either side of the bishops.

There are a few blue and red gonfalons, or heraldic banners, among the crowd of kneeling worshipers. Those kneeling are mainly dressed in white and lining both sides of the street, forming a center aisle. There is a large group of people entering the scene using the center aisle. At the front of the processional are three people kneeling in white albs with orange cinctures. Behind them are six more participants side by side wearing white albs, this time with red cinctures. Following them are people lined up in two rows of four, wearing red vestments over white albs and holding what appears to be books. The final set of participants are grouped around a red canopy. Most of these people are dressed in black albs with green and red stoles hanging from their shoulder. There is one woman among them wearing a black alb with a white surplice on top. Finally, standing off to the side is a woman in a white dress wearing a shoulder wrap.

The color scheme is one of the focal points of the painting. The deep green prevalent in the hills and the trees on the ridge allows the many colors of the processional to shine, specifically the red and white. The beige colored buildings are quaintly nestled between the garden and the verdant hills.

The giltwood frame was probably produced at the same time as the painting. There are carved elements of beading on the frame that borders the entire painting. The outer edge is slightly raised, giving a nice finish to the frame. Until recently, this painting was found hanging in a private home near Versailles.

CONDITION: Small rubs to gilding on frame, with loss of beading motif in some areas.  Recent restorations to paint losses.
