Signed on the lower left of the canvas by the artist, J. Dermont, this French landscape with cows painting is from the 1800’s. The pastoral scene is surrounded by an elegant giltwood frame adorned with beading along the interior and two foliate borders along the outside: a repeating acanthus leaf motif, followed by interconnected olive leaves.

An overcast, blue sky with a few hovering birds can be seen beyond the grassy hills in the background. On the right side of the painting is a wooden fence in front of a grassy knoll lined with trees. A pair of cows stand on the edge of a pond in the foreground, one of them drinking from the water, while the other stands alert. Two sheep are depicted behind them, with one grazing in the lush grass as the other lays down. A must-have for any animal lover, the 19th century landscape with cows is a beautiful example of a 19th century French school painting.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with fleabites to canvas. Minor age separations and losses to giltwood frame. The painting has an eyelet in the back, as well as rigging for installation purposes. Patched to back in a couple of areas, but well done.
