From France, this large copper fish poacher was hand-crafted in the 1800’s and has been decorated with a pair of repousse fleur de lys on each of the long sides. Each lily flower is surrounded by a thin layer of patterned background.
A forged iron handle extends the width of the poacher and is held in place by riveted brackets under the thick rolled rim. The handle has a raised section in the middle which was used to hang the poacher in the fireplace, as most of the cooking in earlier times was done in fireplaces.
Today, this antique copper fish poacher can be used as a jardiniere for plants and flowers. Although given its original function of poaching fish, the piece could be used as a decorative accessory in the kitchen.
CONDITION: Good antique condition with wear consistent with age and use, including a sporadic buildup to the copper. Minor denting and scratches. The interior has light oxidation.
