This quaint oil on board painting of a shepherd and his flock was painted in the 1800’s by the Belgian artist, Henri de Beul. The painting is signed “H. De Beul” and dated 1885 in the lower left corner of the painting. A shepherd in a green cap and blue overcoat is leaning against his crook as the flock grazes in a field. There is a black sheepdog laying at his feet and some trees far off in the distance, giving the scene a sense of tranquility.
Henri de Beul, sometimes credited as “Johan Hendrik de Beul”, was born in 1845 in Dendermonde, Belgium. Known for utilizing animals as subjects, de Beul studied at both the Academy of Dendermonde and the Academy of Brussels. The works of de Beul have been exhibited worldwide, with a notable collection on display by The National Trust at Brodrick Castle in Scotland.
