French Putto and Dolphin Center Fountain Element or Birdbath, Circa 1950s

SOLD

Description

Made from reconstituted stone, or cast stone, which is a mixture of crushed stone and cement, this putto and dolphin center fountain element was cast in France, circa the 1950’s. Decades of exposure to the elements has resulted in a sought-after natural, and darkened patina with moss accumulation and speckled white and green areas.

A tripartite base with cavetto and quarter round molding supports a column comprised of dolphins flanked by scrolled leaves. Each dolphin is facing down and they have been plumbed, allowing water to emanate from their mouths. The scalloped basin above has been adorned with recessed fluting and was designed to facilitate water overflow. There is another waterspout in the mouth of the dolphin that is being carried by the central putto wrapped in loose fitting fabric.

In order to have our putto and dolphin element work as a center fountain element, a basin or tub would need to encompass the angular base. When paired with some low-lying landscape, it would make an ideal center fountain for a small area such as a courtyard or rose garden. It could also be used as a garden ornament or free standing birdbath.

CONDITION: Strong condition with minor imperfections from the casting process, such as fleabites and cavitations. Minor losses to the pedestal column, specifically to a dolphin tail under the basin. The stone has darkened from exposure to the elements, with a light white and green patina.  Please see photos.
