The rectangular oil painting measures nearly 4 1/2 long at the edges of the frame. It is of the Italian school during the 1700s, though the beautiful giltwood frame is 20th century. The scene is a depiction of a brightly dressed European army meeting a group of Eastern or North African nomads. The leader of the group on the left is making an offering to the army general. Although some of the detail colors are very bright and alive, much of the background is dark. We do not find a signature on the canvas, but it was obviously done by a very skilled painter as evidenced in the detailed photos below. Upon closer inspection, you can see good use of light and shadows, details of the individual soldiers faces, the big white rearing horse, spears, war regalia, camels and more. This masterful Italian oil painting from the 1700’s would look stunning under an art light in a study, library, or living room.
CONDITION: Good overall condition, with restorations in the past few years. Painting has been reglazed, some craquelure beneath glaze, one light scratch. Frame has some motif cracks and very minor losses to gilding in areas.
